MacLise was a writer, calligrapher, musician and polymath, a dealer in Nepalese rice paper and the first drummer of the Velvet Underground. La Monte Young called him “one of the greatest poets of all time.” He died in Kathmandu in 1979 and was the subject of a career retrospective in 2011; Translations from the Far Country is the first new collection of his poetry in over twenty years.
